From a distance, the only thing visible from the tall grass in the overgrown paddock was the occasional swish of a chestnut tail. The summer sun was at its high point, warming the pony’s glistening hide as she lay stretched out on her side. It was a wonderful time for a nap, and the high grass made for a remarkably comfortable bed. Earlier that week she had gotten into trouble, one of the other horses at the stables had discovered how easy it was to jump into her field and had been tormenting the mare. That was when her human moved her here, a paddock that had not been used in quite some time with more than enough grass for its lone occupant. The only down side was it was rather close to the stallion’s side, but her closest neighbor was the kind grey named Whizz. Though it always seemed foolish to trust a stud, she felt reasonably safe, all seemed well in her little world.
Delicate harks flicked to catch sounds interrupting her slumber. Raising her head above her cover of foliage, she saw something strange. She stood, shaking the majority of grass and debris from her short coat before making her way closer. Her steps were labored, more so than usual. Her joints ached, a result of the punishment her former owners had put her through. The pony turned her head, keeping her good eye on the stranger as well as she could. Finally she felt she was close enough to make him out. He was huge, especially compared to her petite stature. She watched silently as the new creature interacted with her neighbor and his human. What was he doing here? He looked at the girl like he had never seen one before; his breath seemed labored and nervous.
Salsa stepped a little closer to the more familiar of the pair. Stranger or not, he was a stallion, and it seemed rude to question him directly. What have you found here, Wiser? Though her body was wracked with silent pain, her voice was as peaceful as always. She had been through a lot in her short existence, nothing she was experiencing was new or worth her worry. Besides, her human would be here soon enough to lavish her with attention and make everything better.
